The Supercars Championship is the premier Australian FIA-sanctioned racing series for supercars. The championship puts 3 supercars manufacturers between each other (Holden, Nissan, Ford) and is held on 16 racing tracks across the country. There are a total of 31 races in which the teams and players are competing for the title.
The season starts at the beginning of March with the Adelaide 500 and ends with the Newcastle 500 at the end of November. The point system awards drivers that have completed at least 75% of the race track based on their performance. The maximum number of points that can be won is 300 per event. Of course, the driver with the most points at the end of the season becomes the winner of the Supercars Championship.
Last year, the title went in Jamie Whincup’s hands, with the DJR Team Penske winning the team’s championship. This season things are different, with most experts giving Scott McLaughlin the biggest chances to win. McLaughlin is leading the championship after the first 5 round and a heavy favorite for the title.
The New Zealand driver is one of the youngest competitors in the championship and the youngest driver ever to win a championship race, after winning a race in 2011 when he was 17 years old. This year’s edition of the championship introduced the first Generation 2 Supercars, which opened up the category for a wider variety of engine configurations and body shapes. There were a few changes in the format as well, with the Sydney SuperNight300 becoming the first night race since the Yas Marina Circuit (Abu Dhabi) in 2011. The SydneyNight300 will be a single 300 km. race under lights.
