The Betfred Super League is the premiere professional rugby league club competition in Europe. It currently consists of twelve teams of which one is from France and the others are from England. The Super League started back in 1996, when it actually replaced the Rugby Football League Championship and made a big change to the calendar by switching from a winter to a summer season.
This means that these days the league is played from February to September, in a league format which then continues with a playoff competition between the 5 best placed teams to determine the winner.
Last season’s winners were Wigan Warriors as they were better than Warrington Wolves beating them 12-4 in the super rugby grand final. That was their 5th title which means that they are now one title win closer to Leeds Rhinos who reign supreme with 8 Super League titles next to their name.
This year the favourites for the title are pretty much the same teams as always and last season’s champions, Wigan Warriors, are joined by playoff record holders St. Helens, perennial runners-up Warrington Wolves, West Yorkshire’s finest, and record title holders Leeds Rhinos. These five teams are favoured by bookmakers and the super rugby 2019 odds given to them are relatively shorter than those of other teams.
Event Date: 25 August 2018 – 5 May 2019
Can Wigan Warriors Retain Their Title?
Wigan Warriors won the super rugby grand final last season and with that they managed to finish a memorable season in style. Many bookmakers predict that they will be the team to win the Super League this season as well, considering that they will most likely take the momentum from last season into this one.
Wigan Warriors have compiled a team of individuals capable of producing serial success stories and they have proven this by winning the title as recently as 2013, 2016, and 2018, and when they didn’t win the title in 2014 and 2015, they were runners-up in closely contested finals.
This speaks of great continuity of form and performances and other teams would be hard pressed to produce anything similar to this. Because of this, bookmakers such as MansionBet and Fun88 have made Wigan Warriors their top favourites for the title and have given them the shortest super rugby 2019 odds of 33/10.
In addition, Betboro has decided on making Wigan Warriors (7/2) their joint top favourite, together with St. Helens (7/2), while BetOlimp has made Wigan Warriors only their third favourite for victory and has given them odds of 77/20.
Will St. Helens Turn League Leadership into a Title?
St. Helens finished last season as league leaders, but failed to use that advantage to best effect as they didn’t reach the 2018 super rugby grand final.
Their last title came as far back as 2014 and even though they have participated in all playoffs since 1998 and are the most successful team in this regard, they have failed to reach the super rugby grand final in four consecutive seasons, which is not something that they should be proud of.
However, in spite of this fact, many betting operators, including bookmakers such as BetOlimp, make St.Helens their top favourites. BetOlimp assigns odds of 16/5 for St. Helens, while other betting providers such as Betboro make them joint favourites together with Wigan Warriors at odds of 7/2.
Bookmakers such as MansionBet and Fun88 make St. Helens their second favourite behind Wigan Warriors and give them similar odds of 7/2.
Can Warrington Wolves Notch Their First Title?
Warrington Wolves haven’t won a Super League trophy so far, but bookmakers seem to think that they have a decent chance of winning one this season.
This is probably because they participated in last season’s final, were league leaders three seasons ago and in the last seven seasons have been involved in four finals. However, it seems like whenever Warrington Wolves come close to winning the Super League trophy, they fall short at the last hurdle. This is something that they will definitely have to work on if they want to have any chance of winning the title in 2019.
BetOlimp has quite a lot of confidence in Warrington Wolves as they make them their second favourite for victory and give them odds of 37/10. Other bookmakers however, are not so positive about their chances and consider them as third favourites behind St. Helens and Wigan Warriors. MansionBet assigns them odds of 15/4, just like Fun88, while Betboro go for odds of 4/1.
Will Castleford Tigers Build on their 2017 Success and Win?
The West Yorkshire side Castleford Tigers won the league part of the Super League in 2017 and went all the way to the rugby grand final, but were met there by an imperious Leeds Rhinos side that defeated them comprehensively 24-6.
That final was a blemish to an otherwise perfect season for Castleford Tigers, for whom that was the first appearance in a final. That almost perfect season is an indication that the Tigers can go all the way and maybe be the surprise winner of the Super League.
In fact, as far as super rugby 2019 odds are considered, they probably have the highest odds of all realistic contenders for the title and this can be very important for punters who wish to capitalize on a good value bet. Currently, Castleford Tigers are given odds of 5/1 by bookmakers such as MansionBet, Betboro, Fun88, and BetOlimp, and those odds are a great chance to increase your deposit significantly by backing a team with a realistic chance of victory.
Can Leeds Rhinos Make This Their 9th Title?
In the last 12 seasons, Leeds Rhinos have won the title 7 times. That is an excellent feat in any competition and it is an especially amazing feat in a difficult and trying competition such as the Super League.
However, it should be taken into account that this Leeds Rhinos team is a little further behind that great team in terms of form and personnel and that’s why it should come as no surprise that most bookmakers don’t make Leeds Rhinos their prime favourites.
In fact, they are considered as the least probable contender of the five biggest favourites and the odds they are given reflect just this. For example, bookmakers such as MansionBet and Fun88 give them odds of 31/4 while other bookmakers such as Betboro and BetOlimp go for odds of 8/1 and 17/2 respectively. At these odds, backing the Rhinos might seem like a nice proposition, but be careful as bookmakers are rarely wrong, and currently they feel that there are four better teams than them.
