The Mosconi Cup is an annual 9-ball pool tournament between Team USA and Team Europe. It has been likened with the Ryder Cup in golf where teams representing Europe and USA also take part. The tournament started in 1994 and has been named after legendary American pool player Willie Mosconi.
The Mosconi Cup started as an exhibition event in 1994, but as it grew in popularity, it gradually evolved into a professional pool tournament. Earning a selection in each of the teams has acquired quite a bit of prestige. In the beginning, most world-famous pool players participated in the tournament, but once it became a professional tournament, most bowed out. Steve Davis, one of the biggest snooker legends, continued participating in the Mosconi Cup, but he eventually bowed out as well due to conflicting schedules with the UK Championship, where he appeared as a player and presenter.
The competition has taken place in various locations across the USA and Europe. The players earn invitations to their respective teams through their performances at certain events. After Davis left the Mosconi Cup, there were no snooker players taking part until 2007, when Tony Drago earned a spot on Team Europe thanks to his performance on the European Pool Tour.
The 2018 Mosconi Cup will be held in the breathtaking Alexandra Palace in London, which will be the second time the tournament takes place in the same venue – the first one was in 2016. The upcoming tournament will be the 25th edition of the Mosconi Cup and will be held 4-7 December. Team Europe is the defending champion and the more successful team in the tournament – Europe has 12 wins in the Mosconi Cup compared to team USA’s 11 titles. There has been only one draw until now (2006).
With Team Europe having won the last 8 editions, bookies have made them major favourites for the 2018 Mosconi Cup. This, of course, doesn’t mean that Team USA’s chances should be quickly dismissed.
Launched in 2004, Letou is one of the first online gaming operators in Asia. The team behind this great bookie always strives to improve their products and is growing with every step of the way. Letou has a wide range of sports which include the most popular ones such as football, basketball, and tennis, but it also has various specific sports in their offer including horse racing and e-sports.
Letou’s sizeable offer gives punters the option to bet on pool and snooker matches, including the Mosconi Cup. For this year’s edition of the popular cup, Letou is making Team Europe the odds-on favourite. Team Europe’s odds stand at 1/2, while Team USA is available at 6/4. From a punter’s point of view, team USA is the better choice, but considering the fact that Team Europe has looked unstoppable in the past 8 years, the Europeans are the clear favourite.
With a team featuring newcomers such as 19-year old Eklent Thaci from Albania and former 9-ball pool world champion Niels Feijen from the Netherlands, their chances are looking pretty great. Sadly, the odds don’t.
Fun88 is a well-established brand on the European and UK betting scene. This great bookie is an official betting partner of Tottenham Hotspur for Latin America and Asia and has also partnered with other Premier League clubs in the past. With a portfolio that includes more than 30 sports, Fun88 has something in store for every punter.
Of course, the Isle of Man-based bookie includes pool in their betting offer. When it comes to the upcoming Mosconi Cup, Fun88 favours Team Europe, giving it odds of 1/2. Team USA’s odds look much better at 6/4, but if most experts are to be believed, the European team is set to continue its dominance in the Mosconi Cup.
However, the Americans are not complete outsiders. Shane van Boening is an experienced player and number 1 on the UPA tour, while young players such as Billy Thorpe will surely be looking to present themselves in the best light possible. The Americans certainly won’t give up without a fight and shouldn’t be dismissed. Place a reasonable bet on them and you’ll more than double your investment, which is a nice return.
Betsid is a UK-based bookmaker that launched in 2013. The bookie has a pretty simplistic interface and although it doesn’t offer a huge number of sports and markets, it still has plenty of options for every punter. Betsid’s odds are quite competitive in a crowded industry, which is unusual for such a young bookie. Of course, the site offers betting on pool matches including the Mosconi Cup.
Unfortunately, there are no surprises regarding the favourite – Team Europe is again available at 1/2, while Team USA is being given odds of 6/4. The Europeans are heavy favourites once more, but their odds are not looking pleasant at all for punters. At 1/2, you don’t stand to make any substantial money in return for your bets, which is why you should take the Americans into consideration.
After 8 years of dominance, maybe this is the year where Team Europe falls from the throne. Betting on the Americans will double your initial stake, making them the better choice.
MansionBet is the Mansion Group’s first foray into sports betting. The site was launched in 2018 and has already settled on the market pretty well. Featuring a wide range of sports with a focus on the Premier League and football in general, MansionBet is already a favourite of many punters and will no doubt become a heavyweight bookie sooner than expected.
Of course, MansionBet offers betting on pool matches including the Mosconi Cup. Unfortunately, MansionBet has decided against offering more enticing odds for the winner of the tournament – Team Europe stands at 1/2, while Team USA’s odds are 6/4.
Obviously, the Americans are the better choice if you’re planning to earn some money. Team Europe’s odds are not exciting at all, but there is a reason why they’re heavy favourites. MansionBet doesn’t offer any other markets except for outright winner. Our advice would be to place reasonable bets on both options – in this way, you’ll earn money no matter who wins or loses.
