It is one of the 3 major European rugby leagues and was found in 2001. The Guinness PRO14 league features 14 teams, with the most (4) coming from Ireland.

The league was formed as the Celtic league in 2001, featuring teams from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Over the years, it has grown to include teams from other countries as well, constantly expanding and changing names due to sponsorship reasons. The current season has seen the league expand for a further 2 teams from South Africa.

The current title holders of the Guinness PRO14 league are Irish side Leinster Rugby, who have won their fourth title in the competition. Leinster were crowned champions of Europe 4 times as well and have won the European Challenge Cup once.

The GuinnessPRO14 rugby league takes place between September and May, with the teams involved split into two conferences based on their positions from the previous year. Teams from the same conference play two matches between each other, while also playing one match with teams from the other conference. After the regular season, the top 3 teams from each conference progress to the knockout round. The first positions progress directly to the semi-final, with the 2nd and 3rd placed teams playing quarter-finals. The season ends with a final at a pre-arranged venue.
