Formula 1 Austria GP PreviewThe Austrian Formula One Grand Prix is an auto race which is regulated by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) and has been on the F1 calendar since 1964. The race was held in the Zeltweg area in 1964, 1970-1987, and 1997-2003, before returning to the F1 calendar in 2014.

The Zeltweg area where the Austrian GP was held on two different locations is located in south-eastern Austria. The first race in 1964 was held at a local airfield in the area before a track (Österreichring) was built in 1969. Since 1970, the Austrian GP was held at this track while the circuit was developed further.

After a ten-year absence from the Formula One calendar, Red Bull announced its plans to revive the Austrian GP, striking a deal with Bernie Ecclestone, chief executive of the Formula One Group at the time. The circuit was renamed to Red Bull Ring, occasionally being used for other special racing events.

The Red Bull Ring circuit is 4,318 km long. The 71-lap race has been dominated by Mercedes since its re-entry in the F1 calendar in 2014. It has been won twice by Nico Rosberg (2014 and 2015), and once by Lewis Hamilton (2016) and Valtteri Bottas (2017.)

This year’s Austrian GP (June 29) will certainly be interesting. Nearly halfway through the season, Lewis Hamilton reinforced his lead over Vettel after winning the French GP, so a win or at least podium position for the German is a must. Ferrari hasn’t had much success at the Red Bull Ring in recent years, so this may be the breaking point for their and Vettel’s season.
