The world of darts has two major world championships each year. The PDC and BDO organize their own tournaments where the best darts players test their skills against each other. The BDO, short for British Darts Organization, was the main governing body in the sport until 1994. The famous split in darts gave birth to a new organization now known as the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation). The PDC has its own world champions which is much more popular and held right before the BDO World Championships.
That is not to say that the BDO World Championship doesn’t deserve praise. The BDO is still a widely respected organization, organizing a championship played by some of the biggest names in darts. It was established in 1978, with the first edition held at the Heart of the Midlands. Since the darts split, the BDO World Championship was one of the biggest tournaments on the darts calendar. It was regularly played by the biggest names in the sport, who later moved to the PDC. After moving to the Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke in 1979, where it was played for the following 6 years, the BDO World Championship found a new home at the Lakeside Country Club in Surrey.
Last year, Glen Durrant won the world crown in a thrilling final against Mark McGeeney. This year, Durrant’s the main bookie favourite again. It’s no wonder why – he’s the world nr. 1 on BDO’s rankings list and in great form, so experts and bookies alike give him the biggest chances to win.
Of course, he’ll face tough competition in McGeeney as well as Michael Unterbuchner. The BDO World Championship is scheduled for 5-13 January 2019 and will be held once again at the Lakeside Country Club. It’s a special tournament for UK punters who can’t wait to place their bets and watch the exciting matches.
Event Date: 5 – 13 January 2019
Can Durrant Win Again?
Glen Durrant is one of the legends in the world of darts. He’s a former World Masters and Finder Darts champion and the reigning champion in the BDO World Championship. The popular Duzza has two BDO WC titles in the past 2 years, and this year bookies are sure he’ll win again. He’s in great form at the moment and will definitely be looking for a hat-trick of trophies.
Last year, Durrant squeezed a win over McGeeney in the final at Lakeside. He has since announced his intention to move to the PDC, becoming another great darts player leaving the BDO. Still, he has confirmed his appearance at the 2019 BDO World Championship, and he surely won’t miss the opportunity to win a few more trophies before the switch.
Bookies think the same. Glen Durrant is currently available for evens odds at PWR.Bet, SportPesa, and Fun88, as well as 11/10 at Betsid. This makes the Middlesbrough native a heavy favourite for the upcoming championship, especially when you take into account the odds of the other players.
Glen Durrant will go for a win at every match and try to prove his world-class quality before moving to the PDC. If you think he’ll win a 3rd World Championship trophy, you will double your money, which isn’t a bad return.
Michael Unterbuchner – the Main Challenger for the Throne
German darts player Michael Unterbuchner surprised everyone by qualifying for the BDO World Championship last year and reaching the semi-finals. He’s the first German player to do that, even though he lost to Mark McGeeney. Still, Unterbuchner surprised everyone with a win over nr. 3 seed Jamie Hughes. The German showed his class in this match and announced his name to the BDO scene.
This allowed experts and bookies to recognize his talent. The German is a dangerous player capable of taking on any dart player. This is reflected in his position as a second favourite for the upcoming world championship, being placed between behind Durrant and in front of McGeeney. Unterbuchner’s odds are 8/1 at Betsid, 9/1 at PWR.Bet, and 10/1 at Fun88 and SportPesa. Although too far off from being a major favourite, Unterbuchner has a knack for surprises and could make a run at the trophy.
Invest a nice sum of money on the German player, and you’ll win plenty more in return if he ends up winning.
Can Mark McGeeney Avenge Last Year’s Loss?
Ranked second on the BDO list, Mark McGeeney is probably the best player aside from Durrant on the BDO circuit. A household name in England, McGeeney has decided to switch to the PDC just like Glen Durrant. He said he’s relishing the opportunity to play against the world’s best players, and the BDO will lose a great player when he leaves the tour.
Until then, though, McGeeney still has a world championship to play. This time, he’s out to avenge his last year final loss to Durrant. He’s surprisingly not a second favourite, but comes at the third spot of favourites for the upcoming BDO World Championship, sitting behind Unterbuchner. However, the fact that he’s looking for revenge may make him a much more dangerous opponent. If you’re smart, you could profit from it.
Mark McGeeney is available at 10/1 at PWR.Bet and 11/1 at Fun88, Betsid, and SportPesa. These odds look great for a player who certainly has the quality to win it all. If McGeeney gets his revenge over Durrant and you’ve placed a nice stake on him, you’ll be looking at quite the payout.
Scott Mitchell – a Darkhorse Favourite
Scott Mitchell is a former BDO World Champion (2015) and a well-known name on the BDO circuit. Currently ranked nr. 4 on the BDO rankings list, Mitchell is a tough player who managed to win the 2015 trophy after defeating the legendary Martin Adams in the final. He most recently won the BDO Gold Cup, and is the 4th bookie favourite to lift the 2019 BDO World Championship trophy.
You can place a bet on Mitchell’s 14/1 odds at PWR.Bet, 16/1 at Betsid, and 18/1 at Fun88 and SportPesa. He’s kind of a dark horse favourite for the trophy. Some may look at him as a longshot, but let’s not forget that the Englishman won the trophy in 2015. He may end up doing it again, and should you place a stake on him, you will be getting a large sum of money in return. Mitchell has the quality to win it all – it’s just a matter of who he’ll face on his way to the final.
